Agapanthus, also known as lily of the Nile or African lily, is a beautiful flowering plant that is native to South Africa. It is known for its large, trumpet-shaped flowers that come in a variety of colors, including white, blue, pink, and purple.

One of the best places to see agapanthus in bloom in California is at Montara State Beach, located a few miles north of Halfmoon Bay, along Highway 1. The cliffs above the beach are home to a large population of wild agapanthus, which bloom in mid-summer, mostly in the month of July.

The flowers grow in dense clusters, creating a carpet of color that stretches for as far as the eye can see. The colors of the flowers can vary depending on the variety, but they are typically white and purple.

Parking is alongside the highway and although it is a popular spot for photographers, we did not find it hard to find a spot on a Saturday evening.

In addition to the beauty of the flowers, Montara State Beach and the surrounding area is also a great place to enjoy the outdoors. The cliffs offer stunning views of the Pacific Ocean, and the beach is a popular spot for swimming, surfing, and sunbathing.

There are numerous hiking trails between Montara State Beach and Pacifica, including this beautiful hike from Sharp Beach to Rockaway Beach.

For a quick grub stop, before or after viewing the flowers, head to the Taco Bell Cantina on Pacifica Beach, knowing for its stunning views, and one of the few locations that serve alcohol.

Tips for Visiting:

• The best time to visit the agapanthus bloom is in the morning, when the flowers are still fresh and dew-kissed or around sunset, when the sky is aglow with colors.

• Wear comfortable shoes, as you will be doing a lot of walking.

• Bring a camera to capture the beauty of the flowers.

• Be respectful of the plants and wildlife.
